About Hobart Girls Softball

Introducing and developing fastpitch softball since 1962

Hobart Girls Softball, Inc. (HGS) is a non-profit organization operated completely by volunteers. Marilyn Goss founded HGS in 1962. Mrs. Goss mortgaged her own home to purchase the property on which the "Goss Softball Complex" is currently located. Sadly, Mrs. Goss passed away in 1998, but her legacy lives on. HGS has been contributing to the growth and development of Hobart's female youth for over 45 years. From its humble beginnings, HGS has grown into an organization that currently serves 300+ players, ages 3 and up.

HGS funds itself entirely from registration fees, community sponsorships, concession stand sales and hosting annual softball tournaments. HGS supplies their players everything they need to play softball except shoes and a glove. At HGS we offer a supportive environment where the emphasis is on ensuring the girls enjoy their experience no matter their softball experience level. Girls new to softball are provided extensive instruction and skill development. Those girls more serious about softball are provided the opportunity to discover their full potential through competitive programs that HGS offers.

Every activity in HGS is focused on:

• building self-confidence

• promoting good sportsmanship

• developing fundamental skills

• delivering positive reinforcement

• gaining results from hard work

• fostering a love of the sport

• providing opportunities to excel

• most importantly, having fun

HGS organizes and offers the following programs for the community:

Spring/Summer Recreational Season

A semi-competitive league program that provides a recreational and instructional environment for girls 3 and older.

Summer All-Star Season

A competitive environment for our more adept and dedicated players, ages 7 and up. The program provides our players the opportunity to compete against other local & state All- Star teams.

Adult Women's League

Working with other leagues in our area we provide a Cross Town league for women, 17

and over.

Special Needs Team

During the 50th anniversary year, a team of young ladies with Special Needs began playing in the younger divisions (4u/6u). By 2015, that team was ready to move up to the 8u division and add more players. There are now 7 young ladies on our Special Needs team playing softball in the 8u division with adjusted rules. These ladies play at various levels but all have experienced great success. (Please see "The "Big Mac Attack" article" below"

Coaches Training

In preparation for our Spring/Summer season, HGS provides and requires classroom and hands-on instruction for all or our head coaches.

Pitchers & Catches Clinics

HGS offers our players clinics covering basic and intermediate/advanced training conducted by local professional coaches and high school/college level athletes.

Youth Umpire Program

We provide an opportunity for youth 13 and up to learn to umpire through official training. In addition, they earn money working as umpires at many of our league games.

Youth Concession Stand Program

The programs allows the girls to have a summer job while having ability to play the sport they love. The program introduces the girls to the basic concepts of a work atmosphere including an employment application, working schedule, customer service and team concepts off the field.
